It\u2019s time for a system-wide transformation. On the day of the UN Summit on Biodiversity, Robinson explains where we\u2019ve gone wrong and how we can do better.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Why are we talking about biodiversity now \u2013 in the midst of a global disease pandemic, with economies stretched to their limits and a looming climate crisis?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As we speak, more species are threatened with extinction than ever before. Extreme weather events \u2013 and consequently, fires, floods and droughts \u2013 are happening more frequently and with greater intensity; and zoonotic diseases like COVID-19 now account for the majority of infectious diseases emerging in humans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These are symptoms of a systemic problem, and this requires a systemic solution. We need to completely recalibrate our relationship to nature \u2013 and we need to do so, urgently. &nbsp;&nbsp;Biodiversity is the foundation for all life on earth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>How does biodiversity affect the actual experiences of people in their everyday lives?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Biodiversity affects just about every aspect of human life, from job security and basic health to saving the planet for future generations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www3.weforum.org\/docs\/WEF_New_Nature_Economy_Report_2020.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">More than half of the world\u2019s gross domestic product<\/a>\u00a0(GDP) is dependent on nature.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ipbes.net\/global-assessment\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Three-quarters of all food crop types<\/a>\u00a0\u2013 including fruits and vegetables and some of the most important cash crops, like coffee and almonds \u2013 require animal pollination.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ipbes.net\/global-assessment\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">About half of the global population<\/a>\u00a0relies mainly on natural medicines and most of the drugs used to treat cancer are either natural or modelled after nature.
