Unfortunately, a fridge isn\u2019t even an option in a region where roughly&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.iea.org\/reports\/sdg7-data-and-projections\/access-to-electricity\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">600 million<\/a>&nbsp;people live off the grid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In some Asian countries, such as Thailand, people who can\u2019t afford a fridge use a cooler as a refrigerator instead, but they have to refill it with ice daily. That means there still needs to be electricity somewhere nearby for the ice factory to produce ice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A Brazilian company called Youmma has developed a solution for the African people, particularly small business owners \u2013 a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/edition.cnn.com\/2020\/09\/09\/business\/solar-fridge-youmma-africa-spc-intl\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">pay-as-you-go<\/a>&nbsp;solar-powered fridge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The fridge helps to: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Reduce food waste<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/singapore\/health\/keep-food-in-fridge-to-prevent-food-poisoning#:~:text=Well%2C%20you%20should%2C%20especially%20in,kept%20below%205%20deg%20C.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Prevent<\/a>&nbsp;food poisoning<\/li><li>Keep products fresh for longer<\/li><li>Store medication safety<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to Nidec Global Appliance, which owns Youmma, the cooling system of the 100-liter fridge consumes 25% of the energy of a standard fridge. It was designed specifically for off-grid use, which means it can be powered by a smaller solar panel with a smaller battery, cutting down on costs.
