Because of this, cities are the largest and fastest growing agricultural markets in Africa, with between&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/agra.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/AASR-2020-Feeding-African-Cities.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">$200 billion to $250 billion<\/a>&nbsp;per year in food sales. More than&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/agra.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/AASR-2020-Feeding-African-Cities.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">80%<\/a>&nbsp;of those sales come from suppliers on the continent, according to a new report.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This has created both opportunities and challenges for farmers, particularly those running small farms. The<a href=\"https:\/\/agra.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/AASR-2020-Feeding-African-Cities.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u201c<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/agra.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/AASR-2020-Feeding-African-Cities.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Africa Agriculture Status Report 2020<\/a>,\u201d&nbsp;launched at the opening of the African Green Revolution Forum&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/agrf.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">virtual summit<\/a>&nbsp;on Tuesday, highlights five areas where policymakers and partners can improve farmer access to these urban markets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThere are some pressures put on smallholder farmers \u2014 they need some help to navigate this transition,\u201d said Steven Haggblade, professor of international development at&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.devex.com\/organizations\/michigan-state-university-53940\">Michigan State University<\/a>&nbsp;and technical lead on the report, during its launch. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.devex.com\/news\/5-ways-urbanization-is-changing-agriculture-in-africa-98045\">Read more&#8230;<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The African continent has the most rapid rates of urbanization in the world.
