Since then, over\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2020\/aug\/15\/grounded-carrier-off-mauritius-breaks-apart-risking-ecological-disaster#\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">1,000 tons<\/a>\u00a0of fuel and oil has leaked into the sea, polluting the coral reefs, pristine lagoons, and white-sand beaches beloved by people around the world. The Indian Ocean island is a famous tourist destination thanks to its natural beauty. Now, that may be in jeopardy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The marine disaster is not only ecological \u2013 endangering fish and other marine life \u2013 but economical as well as threatening the island nation\u2019s livelihood. Some scientists have even called the incident the country\u2019s worst ecological catastrophe. What\u2019s worse, the latest news about the bulk carrier MV Wakashio, which is owned by Japan\u2019s Nagashiki Shipping and chartered by Mitsui OSK Lines, is that it\u2019s cracking up (breaking in pieces) and threatening an even greater calamity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Mauritius National Crisis Committee said:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At around 4.30 pm, a major detachment of the vessel\u2019s forward section was observed.
