This figure will increase as they develop their offshore hydrocarbon, energy, tourism, maritime transport, shipping and fishing sectors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These industries are collectively called the \u201cblue economy\u201d. They are&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/au.int\/sites\/default\/files\/documents\/36204-doc-agenda2063_popular_version_en.pdf\">recognised<\/a>&nbsp;as central to Africa\u2019s sustainable development. They can also play a key role in achieving the continent\u2019s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/au.int\/sites\/default\/files\/documents\/36204-doc-agenda2063_popular_version_en.pdf\">Agenda 2063<\/a>. This includes achieving integration, prosperity and peace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But for this to happen, it\u2019s important that the benefits are equally distributed. And resources must be used in a way that\u2019s ecologically sustainable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">My colleagues and I&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.frontiersin.org\/articles\/10.3389\/fmars.2020.00586\/full?fbclid=IwAR2WwUhHt_jYTBpw4NfpJSGrcojrbHI06jf8cKgRaWtqGuPQcm98G2hm_rE\">reviewed<\/a>&nbsp;nine case studies of blue economy projects across the continent. These included the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/features\/2018-08-29\/china-stakes-its-claim-on-west-africa\">Kribi Port project<\/a>&nbsp;in Cameroon and the&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.lapsset.go.ke\/projects\/lamu-port\/\">Lamu Port project<\/a>&nbsp;in Kenya.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We were able to extract findings from both successful and unsuccessful projects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Findings from unsuccessful projects showed that governments had the right intentions. But the emphasis was on economic outcomes.
