This is according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.4icu.org\/top-universities-africa\/\">2020 African University Ranking<\/a>, an annual list released by higher education directory and search engine uniRank.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>South Africa is the most developed and industrialised economy in Africa. Its universities pull thousands of students every year from across the continent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The survey ranked universities based on three criteria:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>being chartered, licenced and\/or accredited by the appropriate&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.4icu.org\/institutions\/\">higher education-related organization<\/a>&nbsp;in each country<\/li><li>offering at least four-year undergraduate degrees (bachelor degrees) or postgraduate degrees (master or doctoral degrees)<\/li><li>delivering courses predominantly in a traditional, face-to-face, non-distance education format<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>More universities are now rethinking the face-to-face teaching model in a world remade by the Covid-19 crisis. The social distancing rules and closure of institutions has seen universities switch to virtual platforms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>UniRank says that the listing aims to provide a non-academic&nbsp;League Table&nbsp;of the top Universities in Africa based on valid and unbiased web metrics provided by independent web intelligence sources rather than data submitted by the Universities themselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Below is the top 20 list of the 2020 African University Ranking:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\" type=\"1\"><li>University of Pretoria \u2013 South Africa<\/li><li>University of Cape Town \u2013 South Africa<\/li><li>University of the Witwatersrand \u2013 South Africa<\/li><li>University of Johannesburg \u2013 South Africa<\/li><li>University of KwaZulu-Natal \u2013 South Africa<\/li><li>Universiteit Stellenbosch\u00a0 \u2013 South Africa<\/li><li>University of Nairobi \u2013 Kenya<\/li><li>University of Lagos \u2013 Nigeria<\/li><li>North-West University \u2013 South Africa<\/li><li>Cairo University \u2013 Egypt<\/li><li>University of the Western Cape \u2013 South Africa<\/li><li>Addis Ababa University \u2013 Ethiopia<\/li><li>The American University in Cairo \u2013 Egypt<\/li><li>University of Ghana \u2013 Ghana<\/li><li>The German University in Cairo \u2013 Egypt<\/li><li>16.
