This is largely due to the fact that tourism funding, which supports the conservation of wide swaths of Africa and some&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.devex.com\/news\/opinion-collapse-of-africa-s-tourism-industry-hits-rural-communities-and-wildlife-hard-97252\">23 million livelihoods<\/a>, has all but&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sandiegouniontribune.com\/business\/nation\/story\/2020-05-15\/africas-endangered-wildlife-at-risk-as-tourism-dries-up\">dried up<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Wildlife-based tourism in Africa is worth approximately&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/travesiasdigital.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/The-Economic-Impact-of-Global-Wildlife-Tourism-Final-19.pdf\">US$71 billion<\/a>&nbsp;annually. Much of this funds the management of protected areas. For example, the protection of just one white rhinoceros at Kenya\u2019s Ol Pejeta Conservancy costs about&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.voanews.com\/covid-19-pandemic\/africas-endangered-wildlife-risk-tourism-dries\">US$10,000<\/a>&nbsp;each year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Since the start of the pandemic there\u2019s been&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.iol.co.za\/saturday-star\/opinion\/the-devastating-effects-of-covid-19-on-wildlife-conservation-48417499\">a cut<\/a>&nbsp;to funds for anti-poaching, surveillance and fence line management in most African reserves. Trophy hunting is a key source of this funding. It contributes an estimated&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/africacheck.org\/factsheets\/factsheet-how-much-does-hunting-contribute-to-african-economies\/\">$200 million<\/a>&nbsp;to economies across the continent annually.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Trophy hunting takes place across much of sub-Saharan Africa with South Africa, Namibia and Tanzania holding the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S0006320706003831\">lion\u2019s share<\/a>\u00a0of the market.
